Finike

The settlement, formerly known as Phoenicus, was founded as a port city by the Phoenicians around 500 BC. Finike, in ancient times, was located in the region known as Lycia (Teke Peninsula). Settlements in the Teke Peninsula date back to the 3rd millennium BC, but archaeological studies have not yet identified any city in the region older than the 2nd millennium BC.

The current official name of the region, "Finike", has no historical background. The name "Phoenicus" was changed in 1937 by the Ministry of Internal Affairs as part of a Turkification policy that became widespread after the declaration of the Republic of Turkey.

Finike's economy is primarily based on domestic tourism and agriculture. Among the agricultural products grown in the district, oranges and tangerines stand out. However, despite its reputation, Finike does not actually have suitable agricultural land for orange production. Oranges were introduced to the district in the late 1960s by Cypriot Greeks and Jewish sailors. This information is mentioned in Prof. Ahmet Kırgıç's book "Modern History and Agriculture in Turkey", published in 2011.

Additionally, according to a study conducted by Akdeniz University Food Technology Institute in 2013, due to the rapid increase in the clay content of the soil in the Finike region, orange production is expected to completely disappear by 2035.
